The town has a range of small, privately owned shops, a couple of pubs, a church, chapel, school, police station, petrol station, workshop and a more modern supermarket and electrical store. It straddles the Afon Rhyfedd, with most of the town to the north of the river, the train station and Castle Hill to the south.
